Pretty in Punk

Lindsay Lohan featured in a creamy beige lace dress is otherwise black-clad, nail polish included. Mischa Barton featured wearing two necklaces: a skull pendant hangs from one, a teddy bear charm from the other. Avril Lavigne featured in a lacy dress paired with Doc Martens. There is a term for this pattern of fashion -- Gothic Lolita, the lastest craze among Japanese girls (aside from "the layered look and fucked up haircuts"). Although all-decked out in baby-doll, fairy tale dresses, there is a caveat, snapping the mouse who falls for the cheese. The caveat is Goth, punk, ska, or subculture, in a simpler word. The juxtaposition of the pretty girl and the punk, the mainstream culture with the one underground -- is it just another instance of corporate America invading the space of us youth, cashing-in on the culture of cool?
